PEER REVIEWS OF PREVIOUS LASERCUTTING GROUP

PEER REVIEWS OF 3 STUDENTS FROM THE FIRST LASERCUTTING GROUP:

Samuel's blog: http://swon202.tumblr.com/
Samuel designed his laser cut light around the shapes of windows and the light passing through them.

Bill's blog http://walkingsuperman.blogspot.com/
Bill designed his lasercut light by looking at mapping the negative spaces between buildings in the city. So instead of the solid areas he had a series of negative areas. He thought of 'waking' as a cyclical process, waking - daytime- sleeping and developed this continuous shape combined with the pattern of the negative spaces to create this form out of paper. When cut, there was so little paper left and the sheet was delicate and flexible enough to be bent into this cyclical form, a figure 8-like shape which references a cycle - never-ending too. The materiality of the object worked perfectly with his concept and the process of lasercutting and there were lots of other possibilities which can be seen on Bill's blog along with photos and ideas for other developments.

Yining's blog: ??
Yining looked at the idea of enclosure and openness within the city and in urban spaces. You can be surrounded by tall buildings and feel enclosed even when in an open space. She created this structure out of leather, a dome made up of individual circles which lets light through and would be taller than a human. She had some really nice photos of the structure with different types of lighting that made it look almost like a camp fire and referenced the idea of cavemen etc when combined with the organic material she used for the lasercut, leather. As usual there were some constraints with the process and Yining would've liked to remove the wire frame supporting the leather design but these kinds of things could be improved with more time spent on a project.
